Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

For the Patties

Ground beef (80–85% lean) – 1 lb
Plain breadcrumbs – ⅓ cup
Egg – 1 large
Milk – 2 tbsp
Worcestershire sauce – 1 tsp
Onion powder – 1 tsp
Garlic powder – ½ tsp
Salt – ½ tsp
Black pepper – ½ tsp
Olive oil – 1 tbsp (for cooking)

For the Mushroom Gravy

Butter – 2 tbsp
Mushrooms, sliced – 8 oz
Onion, finely chopped – ½ small
Garlic, minced – 2 cloves
All-purpose flour – 2 tbsp
Beef broth – 2 cups
Worcestershire sauce – 1 tsp
Dried thyme – ½ tsp
Salt & pepper – to taste

 

Instructions

1. Make the Patties

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Mix gently until just combined and shape into 4 oval patties.

2. Cook the Patties

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and mostly cooked through. Remove and set aside.

3. Prepare the Gravy

In the same skillet, melt butter. Add mushrooms and onion and cook 5–6 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
Sprinkle in flour and cook 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer gently until thickened.

4. Finish the Dish

Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer 8–10 minutes until patties are fully cooked.
Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
